Five-Star Review on

"A political prisoner endures decades in a brutal labor camp, clinging to memory, love, and survival while longing for the family he may never fully reclaim.

Lawrence Walker's translation of Geling Yan’s CRIMINAL LU YANSHI is a masterful and deeply moving work that pairs lyrical prose with a powerful exploration of memory, regret, and resilience."

"Criminal Lu Yanshi holds the feel and excitement of an epic story of survival, offers intriguing scenarios of labor, intellectual, and social reforms that made criminals out of big thinkers, and captures a fluid personal journey that requires no prior background in Chinese history or culture in order to prove accessible and thoroughly engrossing."
